This beautiful piece of glass may look like a cut glass vase but it is actually an old, pressed glass strawholder in the Illinois pattern. The pattern is also known as Clarissa and Star of the East. It has a deep pressed pattern with a stippled star and pleated fan design. It is square and flared at the bottom. These straw holders were originally sold in the early 1900's either with or without lids. You can see this on the page copied from an old soda fountain catalog which shows the flint glass with a lid. They were priced more than double with the lid which is probably why you don't see as many with lids. This strawholder is without the lid.
It measures about 9 1/2" tall, 3 1/2" square at the top and 4 3/8 at the bottom and is in very good condition with minimal wear, no chips or cracks.
